Hi all, we will be doing some alignments during the workshop. MEGA is a very easy-to-use program for aligning sequences. Please upload this program onto your laptop computers before the workshop. You can obtain it for free from

http://www.megasoftware.net/

DO NOT upload the beta version.

Upload version 4.0.

 Colleagues,

I have attached several examples of the scientific output that is possible by undergraduates within a course-based annotation project.  We can discuss these during the workshop.

Hi Team,

I have a Mac, and apparently need Virtual PC (but can't figure out what to do once I follow the link to Virtual PC from MEGA- I can't figure out which program I need on that Mactopia site) or Parallels Desktop for Mac (not so free). Does anyone know which "product" I need in order to run "Virtual PC" on my Mac? Or any other suggestions about whether I "want" the Parallels Desktop instead of Virtual PC?

Thanks,

Michele

Hi Michelle,
It depends whether you have a Mac with an old Motorola chip or the newer Intel processor. If you have the older model G-4 PowerBook like I do, you need virtual PC, the newer G-5's will allow you to run Parallels Desktop or something similar. I have been trying to download Mega-4 since yesterday, as a direct install as well as a zip file,(from the megasofware site) and have been unsuccessful so far.

I have a mac that is intel based and I don't have parallels (I don't think). I have been trying to figure out how to get running what I need, but I am out of time now. I will try to come at 5:30 in the hopes that someone can help me out at that point.
Thanks,
Karen Kirk
